What factors may cause the aging of HDPE sheets?
- Temperature: High temperatures accelerate the aging of high-density polyethylene, so it is important to avoid high-temperature environments during storage and use.
- Light exposure: Ultraviolet and visible light can cause the molecular chains of high-density polyethylene to break down and oxidize, leading to aging.
- Acid-base substances: Prolonged exposure to strong acids or alkalis can cause residual trace catalysts on HDPE molecular chains to accelerate hydrolysis, reducing molecular weight from 500,000 to below 200,000.
- Hydrolysis: High-temperature water (>50°C) can penetrate gaps in HDPE molecular chains, accelerating the hydrolysis of ester additives while promoting oxidative reactions.
How to use HDPE sheets to extend their service life?
Use UV stabilizers: Adding UV stabilizers to HDPE sheets can significantly extend their service life in outdoor environments. Standard HDPE sheets typically have an outdoor service life of 2–3 years, while those with UV stabilizers can last over 10 years.
Select an appropriate installation environment: Avoid exposing HDPE sheets to extreme temperatures, strong UV radiation, rain erosion, and wind and sand abrasion. These factors can accelerate the aging and damage of the sheets.
Regular maintenance and cleaning: Regularly clean the surface of HDPE sheets to prevent the accumulation of dirt and chemical corrosion. HDPE panels have a smooth surface that is resistant to dirt buildup, but regular cleaning helps maintain their appearance and performance.
Avoid mechanical damage: During use, avoid impacts from heavy objects and scratches from sharp objects to protect the integrity and mechanical properties of the panels.
Storage conditions: When storing HDPE panels, avoid direct sunlight and high-temperature environments. Keep them in a dry, well-ventilated area to prevent moisture absorption and aging.
